Pazhassi Raja Review

When the cliche ‘a classic movie’ is used anywhere to describe a movie the first things that come to my mind are a flawless screenplay, behavior of the actors(not acting, behaving), visual beauty of the frames, zero exaggeration of events in the movie and a compact portrayal of events by the director. Our beloved Malayalam film industry has given us a lot of classical movies from the ultra realistic Aravindan and Adoor movies to the fantasy driven interpretations of Mahabharatha and Kerala folk stories by M.T.

The newest entry in the so called list of classics, they say is Pazhassi Raja. Being a hardcore keralite and a Malayalam movie lover I was very much excited about this project especially because of the Hariharan - M.T.- Mammooty trio and a mammoth budget by the modest standards of Malayalam film industry. But after watching the movie my first reaction was a very big disappointment. Disappointed, because it never looked like an M.T. script, because Mammooty was only a shadow of his old self, because of the embellishment of events with zilch reason and at last a stream less presentation of events by the director. Hats off to Venu and Ramnath Shetty for a valiant but unsuccessful attempt to save the show with some world class cinematography.

The film starts with a meeting involving landlords and British discussing the issue of taxation. The name Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja and his heroics strike your eardrums hard through the depiction given by Nambiar, played by Devan to the British. The introduction scene of Pazhassi Raja in which he is shown as coming from darkness to the enthralling radiance of Nilavillaku rocketed my expectations and adrenalin to sky level. But the screenwriter and director completely misses the plot after this riveting introduction of one of the greatest warriors of Kerala. Soon the film plummets in to the ditch of stereotypes and melodrama with over dramatization and recurrence of events. The homogeneity of the story line with repetition of events in different situations is the thing which annoys you the most. From the beginning to the end the only things happening in the movie are

1) Pazhassi Raja being hunted by the British.

2) Thallakkal Chandu(Manoj K.Jayan) and Edachenna Kunkan(Sharath Kumar) helping their boss out of the hassles with their heroics (some poorly choreographed stunts).

3) Some melodramatic scenes between Kerala Varma and his wife Kaitheri Maakam (Kaniha ).

4) Death of one of Kerala Varma’s subordinates.

Repetition of these events as a cycle in different circumstances from start to end, till the death of Pazhassi Raja is what Pazhassi Raja is all about. The makers may argue, that they were trying to be true to history.Making a documentary would have been a much better option if the writer was trying to be candid to history. With such a weak storyline (even if it is truthful to the core to history) Pazhassi Raja was never a material for movie making.Filmmakers who have directed classic historical and biographical movies have selected subjects which had cinematic substance in it, Mel Gibson’s 'Braveheart' (same genre as Pazhassi Raja), Roman Polanski’s 'The Pianist' and even 'Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha' was fantastic in that respect. That is why these films remain in our hearts as classics. May be M.T. was too lazy writing the script of this movie that he did it without any research. Then what about the dramatization of events? Being true to history and dramatization of events doesn’t go together. The film Pazhassi Raja will always be remembered as the weakest script by the great M.T.Vasudevan Nair.

Mammooty, the epitome of Muslim consciousness in Kerala, who was never more than an above average close up shot actor, rocketed to undeserving heights by the Muslim youth in Kerala fails miserably in his portrayal of Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja .In a period war film, the most important thing that captures your mind is the body language of the actors rather than facial expressions. Brad Pitt in 'Troy' , Charlten Hearston in his bible movies, Mel Gibson in 'Braveheart' and Hrithik Roshan in 'JodhaAkbar' fascinated us with their invincible body language. But our grand old Mammooty was not even able to walk like the 35 year old roaring rebel of North Kerala. His action scenes were pathetically appalling. The director was forced to use close up shots in all action sequences involving Mammooty to veil his abject body language. This affected the exquisiteness of action sequences choreographed by Ravi Dewan (JodhaAkbar fame). If you were trying to make a classic war film, why you were using a 60 years old actor, who cant even walk properly to play a 35 year old ultra vigorous rebel. The result is a dud which you can’t show anywhere outside Kerala. The only thing you can do is to satisfy your Malayalee complex, which reflects in all his activities, by calling it a world classic.

A lot of directorial blunders can be pointed out in the movie, the use of English accent Malayalam by Neeli an Adivasi girl, played by Padmapriya is the biggest gaffe you can make as a director. Illaiyaraja’s music is also below par. Some characters and incidents in the movie doesn’t even have a proper conclusion. Padmapriya’s character is an example. All the action sequences in the movie are third rate versions of Movies like Crouching Tiger and Troy. Mammooty’s attempt to copy Brad Pitt’s famous on the run kill scene from Troy is an awfully sympathetic scene. Mr. Mammooty please stop trying things which you can’t do. It’s a miserable sight to see a Malayalee actor becoming a joker by attempting unfeasible tasks.

There are some bright spots in the movie like cinematography, sound mixing, art direction and some exceptional performances from Sarath Kumar and Manoj K.Jayan.

Overall the movie is a letdown which can easily be ignored. It can be called a high budget 'ThuruppuGulan'.

More and more people are using gmail applications daily. The trouble is web apps only works when connected to internet. So it is impossible to use gmail or other web applications when the connection lose continuously. If you are traveling in train or plain the the net connection will break continuously. In order to use gmail again we should reload the page when net is again get connected. I am sure that you will be fed up of this situation. In order to solve this problem gmail has started new feature called 'offline'.
Once you activate 'offline' feature, gmail uses gears to download local cache of your mail. As long as you are connected to the internet, that cache is synchronized with gmail servers. When the net connection breaks gmail automatically switches to offline mode. During this time you can read and send messages. Also it is possible to do all normal actions such as star, label and delete messages. Actually, when you send message during offline will be placed in outbox and sens when net is again get connected.
In order to activate offline feature in gmail,
  • Go to settings and click lab tab.
  • Enable offline gmail.
  • Then you can see new tab 'offline' is created at the top right corner of gmail menu bar.
  • You can activate 'offline' feature by clicking that tab.
I think its vey good technology braught by gmail which will defenitely  make internet more interesting. But this feature is not safe for those who share their computer.

Most useful sites for bloggers

One of my friend recently started a new blog and he asked me the best service providing sites name. Actually there are unlimited number of sites that give free services to bloggers. Any way according to me sites named below will definitely help bloggers. They are….

  1. Technocrati

In this post how can I write other site name before technocrati. No bloggers can avoid this name. Because technocrati is the ‘google of  bloggers’. Spend five minute to sign up and after sign up you should claim your blog. This will definitely bring some traffic. So, that five minute will be worth the effort. Also technocrati have their own ranking system and technocrati search result will be listed on the basis of that rank.

2.   Digg, stumbleupon and del.icio.us

Digg is not just a social bookmarking site. After signup you can publish your post in dig. If your post is sensational or interesting then it will bring heavy traffic to your site. Also you can analyze latest posts submitted by other bloggers. Also you can

use stumbleupon and del.icio.us

3. Feed burner

Feed burner provides custom RSS feeds and management tools to bloggers. After sign up, you should paste code in your site. This will make visitors of your site as a permanent reader of your blog content.

  1. Adsense, Adbrite, Payperpost

You can leave some portion of your site for advertisements. It will bring some income unknowingly.

For advertising on your site I will definitely recommend Adsense. But quality of site should be unique. Other ways Adsense will never approve your account.

Those who face difficulty to get adsense approval can use adbrite or other sites.

Anyway there is a limit to the income through adsense and adbrite. But payperpost will use your posting section for advertisement and they will pay per post.

  1. Mediafire

Blogger and wordpress like blgging service will not give space to host your   file and direct link to download. Mediafire is very good file hosting site allowing 100mb per file upload free with unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth.. By uploading files in this site, you can provide a downloading link to readers.

    6. Statcounter

I am sure every blogger will be encouraged when more visitors are viewing their blog. So, I am agreeing with my friend vish techo(you can see his comment in comment section) that tracking the site is very important. So you can use statcounter or sitemeter, to track your site. Both of them are real time website trackers. After sign up in statcounter , you should paste code inside your blog. So it will track the details about visitors and count the visitors.  Also you can see from where the readers are came.

 7. Btemplateseblogtemplates

Every one knows that first impression makes a lot. So it is neccessary that your site require a good template. There are many website that provides free templates. You can download and use it as yours. I recommend  Btemplates, eblogtemplates for to own good template.

                                                                Continued……..

I know that this list will never end. I think readers enjoyed well and by comments you can refer good sites name and I will add them on list

Pakistan starts cyber war against India?

Intelligence reports says that, after Mumbai attacks anti-India forces in Pakistan are now trying to attack Indian computer network by hacking information about Indian computers through familiar Pak registered websites. These types of attacks are common when India – Pak relation collapses.

For example sites like www.songs.pk have some softwares which will send virus to hack information about site visitors computer and destroys the network. More than 12 lakh Indians are downloading songs and other things from above mentioned site itself. So you can imagine how fast they can dominate on Indian computers and network.

Intelligence says that , now they are using simple viruses on experimental basis before severe attack and later there is a chance to use botnet, NetSky like dangerous viruses. Most of the Indian government official websites can’t resist this type of attacks. So wait and see what happens next.

Gmail unread message count in fevicon

Due to my recommendation one of my friend recently moved to gmail account and he complained me that there is no ‘unread message’ counter in gmail. What should we do to see the count of unread message in gmail?
You can do it by the help of ‘greasemonkey’, a mozilla firefox extention. Once you iog in gmail, the unread message count will show on tool bar. That means the changes made to the web pages are executed every time the page is opened. This will make gmail more user friendly. To activate this facility, follow below steps.
STEP1
Open mozilla firefox browser. Then download and install greasemonkey. If installation is successful then you can see a monkey icon at the right bottom corner.
STEP2
By clicking this link 'unread message count script in fevicon' and press 'install'. Then a script will be installed in 'greasemonkey'.
So I have shown you how to show unread massage count in gmail fevicon. Now you will love gmail more.

Schedule your download

Most of the internet service providers around the world gives ‘free usage time’ at night. For example, in India B.S.N.L provides ‘free usage time’ between 2 a.m to 8 a.m(For rs.250 broadband connection). But some of us never like to break sleep. So, how can they utilize it? I am going to explain a trick by which your computer will automatically download the files during ‘free usage time’. For this method, you should install two free softwares ‘Flashget’ and ‘Wakeuponstandby’. You can download both software from links at the end of this post.

After installing above softwares,

· Open ‘wakeuponstandby’ , specify time to wakeup the computer and other details as given in figure1 above. Then press ‘start’ and minimize it.

· Open ‘Flashget’, click ‘options’ in tool bar, then click ‘schedule’, set ‘downloading time’ and press ‘ok’(fig2).

· Now you click ‘new’ in ‘Flashget’ tool bar. Then paste download link on URL column and set ‘category’ as ‘download’. Also you can set where the file should be downloaded and press ‘ok’(fig3).

After following above steps, you should keep your computer on ‘stand by’ mode and internet should be connected. Then scheduled download will happen automatically and you can enjoy by downloading movies and other bulk files.
